Black Panther

 Black Panther

1 How does Black Panther fit into the Marvel franchise and universe ?

Black Panther fits into the marvel franchise as it is a new superhero who is the King of Wakanda.

2 What makes it different from other films in the Marvel cinematic universe ?

Black Panther mostly features ethnic minority characters with a range of races and different superpowers. The audience get to experience a different superhero from a different culture unlike some of the other marvel superheroes. There is a range of audiences but, they have attracted a wider audience than most marvel movies due to Black Panther featuring a lot of ethnic minority people this represents that Marvel agrees with a diverse society.

3 What  made it successful ?

Consider the film itself, the star, the existing fanbase , the cultural contexts of its release e.g  BLM , oscars so white , the range of audiences.

Black Panther helped the BLM movement due to featuring loads of ethnic minority characters. Marvel already had an existing fan base due to their previous movies such as: Avengers, Amazing Spider-Man, Iron Man etc. It excites Marvel fans to see a new superhero evolving with a different culture and background than others.

Research and summarise the following and explain how they link to the film Black Panther:

Harlem Renaissance was an expression of writing, music and art that occurred in 1920s – 1930s in New York and it was known as the ‘new negro movement’. The movement brought notice to the great works of African American art, and inspired and influenced future generations of African American artists and intellectuals. Harlem Renaissance links to Black Panther as they are a tribe from Africa which represents strength and power and they feely express themselves.

The Black Panthers was a party for self-defence, it was founded 54 years ago in 1966. The original purpose of the party was to patrol African American neighbours and protect residents from acts of police brutality. They were promoting social change in communities. This links to Black Panther as it shows the history to be black in both America and Africa.

Afrofuturism is linked to black panther as Wakanda is an African nation the rest of the world believes to be poor but is secretly rich. Afrofuturism is a movement that explores black identify and black culture

Oscarssowhite is a hashtag created in 2015 used to call out the lack of diversity especially people of colour. Before the famous hashtag, 92% of top film directors were men and 86% of top film featured white actors in the lead roles. A pattern which dated back to decades ago however, black panther won Oscars and helped reemphasis the movement.
