SECTION B ANSWERS

Section B   45 marks ( 45 minutes writing time )

Complete all of  the following questions and publish on your blog. You can plan and research your answers .

 3a What is a media conglomerate ? ( 2 )

A.    A media conglomerate is a company that owns a range of different companies.

3b How does ownership shape the content of newspapers? Refer to the Mirror and The Times (8)

In both The Mirror and The Times, they believe in different beliefs this is shown through their newspapers. The Times are a right-wing side and they support conservatives and Brexit, this is shown through their language and layout of the front cover on the newspaper. The Times will support Brexit and have headlines praising the Prime Minister rather than dissing them.

In the Mirror, they are a left-wing newspaper and support labour. This is evident as they have shown that they don’t support Brexit because they use language that doesn’t support Brexit.

Both newspapers have a target audience of working-class middle-aged people who either support labour (The Mirror) or the conservatives (The Times). This shapes their content as they must engage their target audience to buy their newspaper by adding interest storylines and headlines on the front cover.

3c  What has been the impact of recent technologies on all elements of  the newspaper industry   and how has it responded to these challenges ?  Refer to The Mirror and The Times   ( 12)

I believe that the newspaper industry is dying out as technology is evolving further and further and now newspapers are a thing in the past. For the new generation of people, they are very technology smart and the newspapers have started having online websites which show all their headlines and storylines. Some newspapers will charge a fee to subscribe to the newspapers as everything can’t be free! The newspapers will need to make some sort of profit by the circulation itself or advertising within the newspaper.

All newspapers have responded to it calmly, as both newspapers have an online site where people can view stories online. Newspapers still exist and people still purchase them, but the circulation has dramatically decreased due to more and more people looking online.

There is loads of different advantages and disadvantages to having a newspaper paper version and online version. A newspaper (PV) is convenient for the older generation that like to read it physically, however a paper version does waste paper. A newspaper (OV) saves paper, however the newspaper itself may not be attracting their target audience as they wanted to the younger generation being more technology smart.

4a  What is the importance of  fandom in media products ?  Refer to the Assassins Creed franchise to support your points  ( 8 )

Fandom comes from fans who are obsessed with a video game, celebrity or etc. In this case, there is loads of fandoms of Assassins Creed they have made a range of different video games and have produced them on a variety of consoles, so it is as widely available to anyone who wants to play it. Therefore, there is no difficulty in playing the game, so it becomes easier for the customer to be satisfied.

As the franchise makes lots of money on a circulation of the game, the franchise will also add merchandise or other extras to increase more sales and profits.

4b How is the gaming industry regulated or what are the challenges in this particular industry  ?  (8)

5    How important is historical context to media products ?

Refer to your Tide advertising case study.               (7)

Historical context is important to media products because allows the audience to look deep into another era and see the attitudes they have. For example: in the tide advertising case study, it always shows the different attitudes that was in the era. In the tide, the era was very sexist and focused on females being a housewives by cleaning and looking after the house for your partner.

Empire Analyse

The Best Fonts for Magazine Covers

I have chosen to analyse this entertainment magazine because this is magazine cover promotes the new Terminator film. The terminator has a big audience therefore, loads of people are likely to read this entertainment due to watching and enjoying the terminator.

Codes and Conventions

The models are engaging with the target audience as this magazine uses direct mode of address. The magazine front cover has a colour schemes of grey, white, black and red. This scheme follows a dark colour path, this portrays the movie. The black, grey and white portrays the death within the film and the red portrays the blood and hurt in the film.

The camera shot is a medium shot which allows the audience to see above the model’s waist/hips. This helps the audience explores the model's customers, which may indicate the genre e.g. in the magazine they are holding guns.

Representation

This is a positive representation of the two models’ (male and female), as they are the good people. They portray themselves as strong and powerful as they are positioned with a weapon ready to kill enemies/or defend. The representation is constructed strongly, as the costumes, facial expressions and props help the audience build an opinion on the two models.

Industry Context

The film magazine is called Empire, the editor is Terri White and the first issue was published in May 1989, the circulation of this magazine is 81,221 per issue. Empire markets itself via. online, twitter, Facebook and etc, this helps create a wider audience mainly targeting the younger generation via. social media.

Cross Media Products

I have not discovered any cross media products on my analysis.

Audience

The target audience is working-class males and females who are aged from 16 to 30. I can tell this is valid due to Empire marketing themselves online and on social media rather than a radio or newspaper.

Paper 1 Section B Exam Questions

PAPER 1 Section B EXAM QUESTIONS

 a) What is meant by a mainstream film? [2]

A mainstream film has a popular and well-known production company e.g. Universal and has a big budget therefore they can make a big profit. An example of a mainstream film is Captain Marvel.

 b) Briefly explain what a media conglomerate is. [2]

A media conglomerate is a media institution which owns numerous companies e.g. Disney.

 c) Explain two features of independent film production. Refer briefly to I, Daniel Blake r to support your   points. [6]

I, Daniel Blake is an example of an independent film as it has a niche audience. I, Daniel Blake is a realistic drama which was filmed in Newcastle. For some of the audience, it’ll be local for them this will engage them to watch the independent film to see their local sightings turn into a social realism drama. Due to their low budget, the production company will film in a limited selection of locations in Newcastle and features unknown stars who had very little or no previous acting experience before. There were multiple production companies involved such as; BBC Films, BFI and EOne Productions compared to a mainstream film who would have one production company e.g. Black Panther = Disney.

In Question 3(d) you will be rewarded for drawing together knowledge and understanding from across your full course of study, including different areas of the theoretical framework and media contexts.

 d) Explain how economic contexts shape mainstream films. Refer to Black Panther to support your points. [15]

I will explain how economic contexts shape mainstream films by referring to Black Panther to support points.

Black Panther is known as a mainstream film it is a popular movie apart of the Marvel franchise, which follows an action and adventure genre featuring loads of ethnic minority actors and actresses to promote Afrofuturism.

Black Panther’s had a budget of over $200million and had a box office of over $1.3billion (22 May 2018) worldwide due to Black Panther being a part of the Marvel superheroes. Due to these high profits, Black Panther is known and recognised as a mainstream film.

There is evidence that Black Panther is a mainstream film, as it was so successful Disney are releasing a sequel which is expected to be released in May 2022. This will maximise profits and audience due to it being a part of Marvel. The funding was by Walt Disney due to them being one of the biggest production companies and creating successful and popular films.

There was a large marketing campaign to promote Black Panther, they created a film poster which maximised audience by intriguing the audience with several different enigma codes seen in the film poster and trailer. There were many cinemas targeted to promote the new mainstream Marvel film and was released on different formats and platforms to engage the audience further.

Black Panther was produced by one production company which is Walt Disney, in my opinion this was one of the main reasons why the box office was so popular. In the Curran and Seaton theory, it is believed that the media is controlled by a smaller number of companies primarily driven by the logic of profit and power. I believe that Disney is driven by the profit and power in the industry and strives for success and popularity.

To conclude, I believe I have effectively shown evidence that Black Panther is a mainstream film through funding, box office and many more.

Production Content Planning pt2

Week 4

The people that are featured in the series are vulnerable young adults with mental health issues. The use of technical codes such as; lighting, camerawork, editing and audio will appeal to my audience as the lighting can portray a specific mood. Camerawork can help the audience understand the story and emotions of the young adults that have these mental health illnesses. Editing can create an effect on the audience such as using cuts and transitions. The use of diegetic and non-diegetic sounds will unsettle the audience as there will be a range of different audios through the series.

The narrative will appeal to the target audience due to mental health being such a big thing in the 21st century. Is important for the audience to understand the importance of mental health as it can be relatable in family and friends.

This product is suitable and effective from the producer because the producer has been through some mental health difficulties and can relate to the different thoughts and feelings that some others has experienced. The producer has experienced some struggles with mental health and lack of support, that’s why this is close to her heart.

Production Content Planning

Television - Brief one

My television programme will be a documentary-based series on mental health, it will be presented on ITV2. I will base several episodes on different mental health illnesses e.g. depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar and PTSD. I will structure my episodes as an introduction into the mental health and quick overview of what it is and the symptoms. Then, I will interview a person that has been affected by this mental illness and will ask them questions about their triggers, day to day struggles with this illness etc. Lastly, I will have a psychiatrist explain and speak about this mental illness and how it can affect their life’s etc. The episodes will always end with mental health helplines such as; ChildLine, Samaritans and HopeLineUK.

I want to educate my target audience of 18-34-year olds because the 18-34-year olds sometimes don’t understand the new generation as it was a different generation to them, and the world is evolving rapidly. The younger generation face so many battles they must face daily with new worries and feelings. This series will allow others to explore the mind of their younger brothers and sisters for example, so they can get a feel or ease of how they feel or cope with their illness.

I will use a range of different technical codes such as; lighting, editing, camerawork and audio. I will use non-diegetic and diegetic sounds, light colours and lighting effects, camera angles and camera shots and lastly I will use cuts and transitions to create effect for my audience.

BRIEF 1

Brief 1 - Television

I plan to do brief one on television which includes an audio-visual scene and a print-based magazine.

I have chosen brief one, as I believe it has a good target audience that I could attract due to it being based on a younger generation. I can use my knowledge on camera shots and angles and put everything together from my experience in GCSE Media at secondary school. I would need a strong storyline and I believe that highlights my strengths of being very creative and having a wide imagination.

The task b would be effective as well, as I have experience in doing magazines due to GCSE Media Studies. I enjoy doing magazines and making it creative and bold for my target audience. The criteria is fair and I could highlight that all in my television magazine effectively with effort and motivation. I could use my knowledge on techniques to attract my target audience e.g. direct mode of address, colour schemes etc.

Black Panther - mainstream

List and explain the elements that make Black Panther a typical mainstream film.

Look at your previous notes and blog posts about mainstream films and how they maximise their profits to help.

You should consider the following and find relevant information:

GENRE

STARS

The actor who plays Black Panther is Chadwick Boseman. Chadwick is well-known American actor who has featured in Captain America: Civil War, 21 Bridge and Get On Up. However, Chadwick Boseman sadly passed on the 28thAugust 2020. I believe that the stars increased the budget and profits of the films due to the film being so popular. The size of audience expanded due to their mostly being ethnic minority stars, it creates movements such as: BLM and it has shown Afrofuturism.

AUDIENCE

The audience is mainstream and very wide in Black Panther and it attracts a range of different people as they show an interest to superhero’s, Marvel, Afrofuturism and black panther movement. There is a pre-existing audience due to Marvel fans and Black Panther being a part of the Marvel and Chadwick being featured in Captain America: Civil War. There isn’t a specific

The money came off Disney, due to them being one of the biggest production companies and creating successful and popular films. Black Panther was one of the black characters in comics as he is a member of the royal family in the fictional African country of Wakanda.

MARKETING CAMPAIGN

There was a large marketing campaign to promote Black Panther, they created a film poster which maximised audience by Intriguing the audience with several different enigma codes seen in the film poster and trailer. Black Panther

 Black Panther

1 How does Black Panther fit into the Marvel franchise and universe ?

Black Panther fits into the marvel franchise as it is a new superhero who is the King of Wakanda.

2 What makes it different from other films in the Marvel cinematic universe ?

Black Panther mostly features ethnic minority characters with a range of races and different superpowers. The audience get to experience a different superhero from a different culture unlike some of the other marvel superheroes. There is a range of audiences but, they have attracted a wider audience than most marvel movies due to Black Panther featuring a lot of ethnic minority people this represents that Marvel agrees with a diverse society.

3 What  made it successful ?

Consider the film itself, the star, the existing fanbase , the cultural contexts of its release e.g  BLM , oscars so white , the range of audiences.

Black Panther helped the BLM movement due to featuring loads of ethnic minority characters. Marvel already had an existing fan base due to their previous movies such as: Avengers, Amazing Spider-Man, Iron Man etc. It excites Marvel fans to see a new superhero evolving with a different culture and background than others.

Research and summarise the following and explain how they link to the film Black Panther:

Harlem Renaissance was an expression of writing, music and art that occurred in 1920s – 1930s in New York and it was known as the ‘new negro movement’. The movement brought notice to the great works of African American art, and inspired and influenced future generations of African American artists and intellectuals. Harlem Renaissance links to Black Panther as they are a tribe from Africa which represents strength and power and they feely express themselves.

The Black Panthers was a party for self-defence, it was founded 54 years ago in 1966. The original purpose of the party was to patrol African American neighbours and protect residents from acts of police brutality. They were promoting social change in communities. This links to Black Panther as it shows the history to be black in both America and Africa.

Afrofuturism is linked to black panther as Wakanda is an African nation the rest of the world believes to be poor but is secretly rich. Afrofuturism is a movement that explores black identify and black culture

Oscarssowhite is a hashtag created in 2015 used to call out the lack of diversity especially people of colour. Before the famous hashtag, 92% of top film directors were men and 86% of top film featured white actors in the lead roles. A pattern which dated back to decades ago however, black panther won Oscars and helped reemphasis the movement.

BBC1 & ITV2

BBC1 & ITV2

BBC1

BBC1 was first launched on the 2nd of November 1936, which is over 80 years old. Its main target audience is the older generation, as they play the soaps and news mainly. The BBC shows well-known programs such as: “EastEnders”, “The One Show “and “Doctors”. The BBC is mainly funded by the television license fee which gives them an annual budget for 2012-2013 was £1.14bn. As we are in 2020 now, you can imagine that budget only rising due to the population grows as well as the intelligence of technology. The BBC1 channel has reached a total of 11.7m viewers across the entire week due to the new coronavirus storyline. It is 70% higher than its average in 2019 and it has been the channel’s biggest week since 2015.

ITV2

ITV2 was first launched on 7th December 1998 which is just over 20 years old. ITV2 is seen as a newer trendy channel for the younger generation usually producing reality-tv. ITV2 is famous for showing “Love Island UK”, “TOWIE” and “Celebrity Juice”. ITV2 targets the younger generation of 16-34-year olds and this channel attempts to “capture and retain a gender-neutral, mischievous and fun-loving audience”. ITV2 has had viewing figures of 26k. However, the popular show “Love Island” has had over 3million people tune in to watch the summer 2019 cast as Amber and Greg win the fifth series of ITV2’s Love Island.

Specialist and independent record labels

An independent record label is a record label that operates without the funding of major record labels and it is a niche record label. Independent record labels ten to work with other smaller companies and have smaller relationships for their distribution and publishing needs.

Specialist record labels are the more global labels that have a wider audience compared to an independent record label.

Audience

A psychometric audience profile defines an audience by how they think and consider their values and attitudes.

The Succeeder:

o   Has a high social status

o   Tends to be very organized

o   Have a lot of responsibility

o   Aim to be prestige

o   They seek control

The 18-34-year-old succeeder would be typically interested in documentaries, as it explores an element of reality in the world and seen as respectful. However, I believe that 18-34-year-old succeeder enjoys programs such as “Keeping Up with The Kardashians” as it is reality tv and shows a rich and wealthy atmosphere of the world which they can relate to as successful people.

LNWH exam question

Explain how the radio industry targets audiences. Refer to Late Night Woman’s Hour to support your points. [ 10 marks ]

Introduction

In this exam question, I will attempt to answer and explain how the radio industry targets audiences and will refer to Late Night Woman’s Hour to support my points.

LNWH

Late Night Woman's Hour was a spin show from the original show back in the 1940’w called Woman’s Hour. LNWH It is a late-night edition and is produced by BBC Radio 4, it can be streamed via BBC iPlayer. It started in 2015 with a one-month pilot run, scheduled twice-weekly on Thursday and Friday at 11pm for one hour. It was hosted by Lauren Laverne (2015-2018) and Emma Barnett (2018-Present).

LNWH is very interesting, so, therefore it aims to attract well-educated, intelligent, and middle-class and middle-aged people as the guests on the show can include authors, artists, celebrities, etc. These people that feature as guests on LNWH are successful in their career and very intelligent and aware of affairs/debates around the world.

BBC Radio 4

BBC 4 has a remit to be a mixed speech service, offering current affairs occurring around the window and must provide a variety of shows e.g. drama, comedy, and factual. Radio 4 programs must be high quality, original and engaging, as it is BBC Radio 4’s purpose.

Radio 4 has a target audience of 51% female and 49% male. The average age of a BBC Radio 4 listener is 56 years old; it is clear to say that Radio 4 attract an older audience due to the interviews and debates whereas, the younger audience is interested in music and not ongoing debates around the world.

The internet has evolved through the years, which allows more and more programs to have a wider audience due to the new people using the internet. This means that LNWH will gain more viewers due to popularity of the internet. It encourages more and more people to use the internet, as LNWH has a range of episodes and podcasts on BBC iPlayer free of charge. However, the older generation may not be used to/ or know how to use technology to a correct standard. This can affect the amount of views LNWH receives due to the older audience not knowing how to use the technology currently.

The current target audience is mostly attracted due to the guests on the show and the theme of the episode e.g. breakups, homelife etc. As some audiences will prefer topics e.g. the older audience may prefer topics such as; career, gender price gap, money etc. Whereas, LNWH might attract a few younger viewers on different topics such as; breakups, losing friends, James Charles and Tati Westbrook feud. Some fans of LNWH will obviously prefer a presenter on LNWH but, LNWH also uses direct mod of address this makes the audience/viewer feel special and as if the presenter and viewer has a relationship because it seems like they are speaking to them directly due to addressing them as “you”.

Conclusion

To conclude, I believe that I have answered and explained how the radio industry targets audiences and have referred to Late Night Woman’s Hour to support my points effectively.

LNWH

Late Night Woman's Hour

Introduction

Late Night Woman's Hour was a spin show from the original show back in the 1940’w called Woman’s Hour. LNWH It is a late-night edition and is produced by BBC Radio 4, it can be streamed via BBC iPlayer. It started in 2015 with a one-month pilot run, scheduled twice-weekly on Thursday and Friday at 11pm for one hour. It was hosted by Lauren Laverne (2015-2018) and Emma Barnett (2018-Present). The target audience for LNWH is middle-aged female, it features several different guest panelists every episode.

BBC Radio 4

BBC 4 has a remit to be a mixed speech service, offering current affairs occurring around the window and must provide a variety of shows e.g. drama, comedy, and factual. Radio 4 programs must be high quality, original and engaging, as it is BBC Radio 4’s purpose.

History and Background of LNWH

Women's hour was first broadcasted on the 7th of October 1946. the show offended some listeners with its makeup tips and male host as it was considered patronizing for some viewers.

Themes and subjects covered in LNWH

LNWH discusses all different topics and subjects e.g. how to handle a breakup & how to make your voice heard, anxiety, etc. This causes LNWH to build viewers, as they discuss a range of different subjects this can easily be spread e.g. through friends and families by social interaction and discussing together.

Structure and content of typical episodes

I have discovered the episode “home”.  It explores home life and careers, discussing whether work-life can connect with home life. The theme will be mentioned, and they will go around the table discussing different aspects of these themes and the different opinions on the subject. The phone-in session is normally towards the end of the show/podcast, as it allows any questions to be answered from viewers wanted to find out more information.

Background of Presenters

Jane Garvey

Jane Garvey is a British radio presenter who featured on LNWH. She was born on the 23rd of June 1964 and is aged 55 years old. Jane became a news editor before leaving in 1988 to join BBC Hereford and Worcester as a reporter. Later in 2007, that Jane was leaving 5 Live after 13 years and that she had joined BBC’s Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour.

Lauren Laverne

Lauren Laverne was born on 28th April 1978. She is 41-year olds and was born in Sunderland, England.  Lauren Laverne had loads of presenting in television shows and documentaries through to The Alphabet Show to Tee and Mo on CBeebies. Lauren was a columnist for The Guardian from 2012 – 2014, writing about style and British culture. Lauren launched an online platform aimed at women called “The Pool”. It was co-founded with writer and magazine editor Sam Baker and includes a range of British journalists.

Emma Barnett

Emma is a British broadcaster and journalist who is 35 years old. She is a presenter for BBC Radio’s 4 Woman’s Hour, she was well recognized as she was the youngest presenter in the program’s history.  Before Late night woman’s hour, she was a journalist and joined “The Daily Telegraph” and became a digital media editor. Then, I became a radio presenter for LBC for three years. Emma has had her fair share of broadcasting and presenting history in her years.

Use of spoken language

In the episode of “home”, it introduces the episode as “on this day on woman’s hour…” The use of mode address is used as they ask you and ask rhetorical questions to engage the audience’s attention, therefore this makes the audience feel involved as it gets them thinking. They use formal language, as they address each other politely and formally as the presenters and guests talk with respect and manners.

Target audience of LNWH

In LNWH “home” episode it has an early reference to Game of Thrones as “winter is coming” which aims to target a younger audience than the typically Radio 4 Woman’s Hour listeners.
